Wood screws have greater holding power than nails. Screw size is determined by length and diameter. The diameter of a screw is given as a gauge number. Screws are further classified by head shape, surface finish and material.
The wood screws most commonly used are flat headed, made of a mild steel with a zinc chromate finish. They are labeled F.H., which stands for flat head. Specialty work requires contractors to specify nickel, chromium plated or brass screws.
