NAIL TYPES

Nails are available in a wide range of types and sizes. The five basic types are illustrated below. The common nail has a heavy cross section and is designed for rough framing. The thinner box nail is used for toe nailing in frame construction. The casing nail is the same weight as the box nail, but has a conical head. It is used to finish carpentry work and to attach door and window casings or other wood trim. Finishing nails and brads are quite similar and have the thinnest cross section and the smallest head.
