INSULATION VALUE OF MATERIALS

In the chart below "k" (in units of Btu in/ ft2 hr F) is heat conductivity over a thickness of 1 inch and "C" is heat conductance (in units of Btu/ft 2 hr F) over the specified thickness. "R Value" is the most common number used to compare the insulating properties of various materials and is typically marked on the wrapper or container of the insulator . The "R Value" is effectively the materials resistance to heat-flow and is based on the "k" and "C" values. "R Values" are the reciprocals of "k" (which is 1/k) or "C" (which is 1/C) for a given material.
