Footings are concrete slabs, which support the weight of a brick wall and provide an even distribution. They are necessary to prevent uneven settling which can cause cracking the walls. Footings must be of ample width and thickness to carry the expected loads and should be built according to local building code requirements.
Footings should be placed below the frost penetration on firm, undisturbed soil of load-bearing capacity. Generally, footings for small structures are built half as thick as they are wide and twice as wide as the thickness of the walls that will bear on them. The footing is poured into a trench with or without forms.
