BLOCK TYPES AND SIZES
 

As the name suggests, concrete block is made of concrete. It is used in much the same manner as brick. Standard wall block is available with face dimensions of 15-5/8 by 7-3/8 inches and a variety of widths: 7-5/8 inches is the most common. This standard block is commonly referred to by its nominal dimensions, as a 16 by 8.

Cinder and terra cotta block are also available. Cinder block is made of a lightweight concrete. Terra cotta block is made of a mixture of clays and is available glazed and in colors. It is often used for decorative trim and storefronts.

Glass block is a hollow block made of glass. It is translucent. It admits light but is not transparent. This type of block is made in different colors sizes and patterns. It is never used for load bearing wails, but is popular for decorative purposes and as an alternative to traditional windows.
