CALCULATING CUBIC VOLUMES

Concrete and mortar are normally sold and used on a cubic volume basis (either cubic feet or cubic yards). Use the following to calculate the amount of concrete you need for a slab:

  • Cubic feet of Concrete = Slab thickness in feet x Slab width in feet
                                                  x Slab length in feet
  • 1 cubic yard = 27 cubic feet
  • 1 cubic foot = 1,728 cubic inches

  • In using the above equations, note that the volume of the final concrete mixture is approximately two-thirds the volume of the original cement-aggregate mixture. This occurs because the sand and cement fill in the void spaces between the gravel fragments.
